Second Sex
I've just started reading The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir and I was thinking as I wrote it, and considering woman today-How much have woman won in getting into the mainstream, which is still male-dominated? Getting into the system, whether through professional jobs, college admissions, is still within the male context, the patriarchal history and context. So I ask, has the dominant culture learned to adopt those strengths of what it means to be feminine (de Beauvoir will let me know just what that means), or have woman adopted those characteristics of the patriarchy necessary to survive? Which has changed? And who is better off for it?

I think so. Women are still working within the (patriarchal) system. THink of People of Color who are in power possitions in our nation--Condi? ISn't she just as racist? You are over there in NOLA, right? WHat about Ray Nagin. Hegemony works in mysterious ways.
Even I. Didn't I recently fall into a possition with a..ummm...little power at the org that you are volunteering with? ;)
Do I need to act more like the patriarchy to get ahead? (Do I want to get ahead?)Can I/we/they use it as an oppurtunity to softin the patriarchy? or transform the movement little by little.
Miss ya, sweetie.
Hm rebecca,
i would say you have to put up with the patriarchy residue that hasn't been internally challenged by those in charge. that would seem the limit of "upward movement" (or maybe "being yourself" is a better term) in an organization that exists within the patriarchal system. Carajo!
